Big Day

My brother Eric came home from the hospital today. Several years ago, he had to have a stent implanted in his heart. A second cardiac vessel has narrowed since then, and he had to have a second stent. I'm just glad that they found it in time.

I've sold all of my columbines, cardinal flowers, rudbeckia, and hibiscus- even the ones that I intended to keep for myself. All of these were 2-year plants started last season. I've developed a good market for the second year plants because people are getting great results with them. Time to get to work on this year's crop.

I visited my friend Ty's  orchard. He has 400 more trees to plant, 700 more to trellis, and umpteen rootstocks to graft. He showed me his new chip-budding device-very nice! There's 13-15 inches of snow in the orchard, but it's supposed to get up to 68 degress F on Friday, and 73 on Saturday and Sunday. He'll be in the mud, and I'll be shoveling horse manure for my compost pile. Fun-here we come!

My Hubby had to have a stent put in a blood vessel close to his heart this spring too.
Speaking of fun, I'll be shoveling and raking wood chip mulch the rest of this week.

I hope that your hubby is feeling much better.

I'm thankful that I live near a stable and can get all of the manure that I want.

He came home healthy as a horse.
And hungry!
But then he had a bout of stomach virus and couldn't eat for 24 hours.
He finally got back to normal inside of two days and then made up for lost time eating.

sounds like fun to me! Gary and I have to go out this weekend and look for composted manure, hopefully at least a few different kinds for a better mix, to put into our soil mix we are using this year :)

As I told someone else, organic gardening has turned me into a connoisseur of manure. In addition to the horse manure, I get manure from my brother-in-law's goats.

I don't like chicken manure-it can burn plants, it's full of weed seeds and feathers, and draws flies.

Good luck on your search!

Best wishes for Eric!
The two-years sound, well, sound, and a good purchase for your customers.
We're cleaning out the winter garden this weekend - from pots. Then we'll batch the soil, put it aside in garbage cans and let it rest a bit, allowing the disease organisms to fritter and, eventually, whither. Meanwhile, we'll mix another batch with compost and get on with things. I need to find a used kitchen sink-counter - all metal - for Herself, as a work station outside by the potting and growing area.

I used to have an double sink that I used as a workstation.

Foe the last several weeks, I've been cleaning the greenhouse, sterilizing pots, organizing equipment, etc. The work goes better when things are in order.

Eric had a nosebleed this evening. It scared me to death, but I think that he's OK.

Does your friend have grapes for sale? I need a bit older vines than I can find. Anything fun or interesting? I am building a small orchard/vineyard for a client.

Ty doesn't have any grapes. I could ask my friend with a vineyard...

Try Century Farm Orchards for apple and peach trees. They have a website.
