Thanks for bringing this to my attention. (I feel like I gotta go cut a switch now...it'll make me feel better even if I don't get the chance to use it.) :0
What's amazing to me is that this is being advertised by many in the Agricultural machine as adressing the issues we have had in our meat supply. Sadly, I've seen a lot of support for this bill in a number of LJ comms. Fear is a wonderful way of controlling the masses.
One of my friends wanted to test all of his cattle so that he could certify it as free of BSE. Other beef producers protested, afraid that they would have to spend a few dollars on testing. The government blocked his plans.
Big Ag's pawprtints are all over this bill. There is nothing here to address the dangers in meat production.
I got into looking at, and commenting upon, the ag legislation because of NAIS. I'm vehemently against it, as I think it'll drive out smaller producers, and won't do anything for food safety. Nothing about NAIS tracks the parts of the animal once it's been slaughter. TO me HR 875 is like NAIS for vegetables and everything else.
Nothing is wrong with the current system of food safety and inspection, except, Congress will not give enough money to support the current system of food safety and inspection. It's underfunded, so it doesn't work right. Coming up with new, restrictive laws, which will essentially make anyone growing a head of lettuce or some thyme a criminal, is wrong. It won't make the food any safer, but it will make it controlled more and more by big Ag. And I think that's the ultimate goal.
Ok, I'm off my pulpit. I'd suggest writing or faxing your Congress critters and letting them know you don't like this bill. It might make a difference when they vote on it, very soon.
