Wild Horses at Merlefest

This is Emmylou Harris and the Waybacks with John Cowan, Sam Bush, and Ron Ickes performing "Wild Horses" live at Merlefest. It was amazing; I wish that I had a better quality video to post.  There's a pretty good MP3 making the rounds. Let's hope that they record and release it.

Did you go to Merlefest? Because, if you did, I may need to hate you forever. :)

I just watched an interesting program on PBS called Legends & Lyrics. It's a series of songwriters in the round shows with this one being Kris Kristofferson, Patty Griffin and Randy Houser from Alabama.

It made me "homesick" for playing music again, especially watching Kristofferson. I used to perform just a ton of his stuff back in the 70's and the show reminded me what a great, great songwriter he is (and that he still is an acquired taste as a singer).

Every year, somebody gives me free Merlefest tickets. You'd love the jam sessions.

You can earn free admisssion to Merlefest in return for 4 hours volunteer work helping run the festival. Should you ever decide to come, it'd be the frugal way to go. Also, there are free pre-festival shows and jam sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday nights before the main festival opens on Thursday. Local campgrounds accomodate festival goers or you can camp at nearby Kerr Scott Lake. Some people will open their homes to visiters. With some careful planning, you can do the festival on a shoestring.

Tell you what, one of these days when my cabin is finished, plan to come to Merlefest, and I'll put you and your sweetie in the spare room. No cost, and it's a scenic, virtually traffic free 10 or 15 minute ride to Merlefest.

I have no idea when the cabin will be finished; my friends and I are doing all the work, and I'm building as I get the money. No mortgage, but a high level of patience is required.

Yeah, it only took about a week for me to reply to your kind offer.

Thank you.

I really, really appreciate the thought and, some year down the road, would love to attend.

Right after I made that post, I realized that it could give the impression that I run a weird household where just anyone is welcome. That isn't true. My stepfather and my best friend have told me that all you have to do is pay attention, and people will reveal themselves to you. This is even true on a blog; the words add up to a self-portrait. Anyone with a secret can't help themselves-they'll tell you all about it one way or another in an attempt to prove that they're so slick that they can put one over on you.(Watch my blog for a post about someone who did this very thing.) Your words paint a picture of a good-hearted, decent man with a nice family. So yeah, it's safe to visit sometime; I'm not going around inviting just anybody to the house.

Thanks greatly, for being there and loving this music! (and for the posted cut)
Good and plentiful memories there.

I didn't make the video, I swiped it off Youtube.

You'll have to come one year! Contact me beforehand, and I'll do my best to help you have a great visit.

Will do. THANKS. Part of our extended family and friends have gone to MerleFest for years; the other and friends to JazzFest. We're in the latter group.
We're really due a little ecumenicism, eh? (:

You'd be surprised by the variety of music at Merlefest. My brother went bonkers the year that Elvis Costello was a featured performer and he got to meet him.

I will be glad to gather any info that your family members would like about this area.
