WXII news in Winston-Salem, NC produced a hilarious report on this story, featuring this quote from on of Sanford's SC Republican colleagues: "It's bizarre behavior, but that's not unusual for this governor." The story pointed out that Sanford was missing during Father's Day, but failed to mention that Sunday was also the summer solstice, the traditional day for nude hiking. A nature enthusiast, Sanford admits to being on the Appalachian Trail, a favorite of nude hikers. Perhaps he was letting it all hang out while clearing his head.
As mentioned in this article, Sanford once brought live pigs into the house chamber to protest pork barrel spending. The pigs defecated all over the place, making their own statement about state government. 

Ever read Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker series? The job of the President of the Universe was to behave outrageously, entertain the masses, and detract attention from the people who really ran the Universe. Perhaps Sanford's presidential hopes aren't dead after all; in an era of excess and reality TV, he's perfect. Think about what legislators, lobbyists, and special interest groups could get away with while Sanford keeps Fox and MSNBC busy.

I think the biggest strange thing about this....IF he was hiking...no one noticed him packing supplies??? Apparently, his family didn't give a damn what he was doing any more than we do.

I just got in from plumbing out of doors and grabbed a shower and g&t. Feeling a bit better. I caught the 1600 CDT NPR headline. Let's see, the SC Gov, Mark Sanford, said that he's be up on the AT nikked, but was really in Argentina (a helluva long flight; I've done it) in the same outfit, only with better company?
And this is, errr, family values, right?
