I worked as a waitress when I was younger. One night, I hadn't made a lot of tips when one of my favorite customers, a very good tipper, came in. He usually came with friends, but he brought his wife that time. Once the meal was over, I watched him slide a tip under the plate, then walk to another table to speak to someone. His wife held back a step or 2 and reached under the plate, grabbed the tip, and put it in her pocket without her husband seeing. The cook was watching with amusement and told me that the look on my face was priceless.

When I got home and told my stepdad about it, he guffawed and said "It must have been her shopping money."

Happens all the time. My waitress friends and my daughter have all told that story. The worse tips are from a group of moms and kids without dads or just girls nights out. Whenever I'm at a table full of woman I alway overhear an argument, not about how much to tip, but how little. NOw I no I just made a stereotipical statement, and their are probably exceptions, I've just never seen one.

Groups of women are notoriously poor tippers, but families straight from Sunday morning services are worse. As God's annointed, they expect and demand special treatment. The kids make huge messes while the adults make demand after demand. Then they leave a 50 cent tip for a table of 10 to 20 people. They gave at the collection plate while everyone was watching, so they feel no compunction to further enrich the poor.

I was just like them and then I started working for myself and saw how hard life is -- So I've straightened up and even admonished hubby from time to time to tip more or to not get upset if I'm the one that's tipping. Life is hard and your feet hurt, and if you're a good waiter/waitress, you deserve people knowing that.

Waitresses make something like $2 or $3 an hour plus tips, so it's an act of cruelty-or extreme anger-not to tip.

That's a reminder I live with.

Both of us worked in restaurants when young. We remember how difficult it can be to deliver really good service, esp. if the kitchen or bar are having a bad day.

Most days, it wasn't too bad. I can be likeable and amusing, so I usually cleaned up on tips. People like it when you're not too intrusive, yet show concern for their enjoyment of the meal.

Anyhow, I learned a lot about people.

that's just &*^%$%

my mom worked in the service industry so i have an inkling of an idea how hart the work is - as a rule i tip 25%, more if the service was outstanding, seldom less ( you have to really piss me off to get less) - of cause i go out so seldom that maybe my view is tinted

anyway if this would happen to me i would loudly tell the woman - hey your husband left this for me! just to watch her reaction
