I worked as a waitress when I was younger. One night, I hadn't made a lot of tips when one of my favorite customers, a very good tipper, came in. He usually came with friends, but he brought his wife that time. Once the meal was over, I watched him slide a tip under the plate, then walk to another table to speak to someone. His wife held back a step or 2 and reached under the plate, grabbed the tip, and put it in her pocket without her husband seeing. The cook was watching with amusement and told me that the look on my face was priceless.

When I got home and told my stepdad about it, he guffawed and said "It must have been her shopping money."

Happens all the time. My waitress friends and my daughter have all told that story. The worse tips are from a group of moms and kids without dads or just girls nights out. Whenever I'm at a table full of woman I alway overhear an argument, not about how much to tip, but how little. NOw I no I just made a stereotipical statement, and their are probably exceptions, I've just never seen one.

Groups of women are notoriously poor tippers, but families straight from Sunday morning services are worse. As God's annointed, they expect and demand special treatment. The kids make huge messes while the adults make demand after demand. Then they leave a 50 cent tip for a table of 10 to 20 people. They gave at the collection plate while everyone was watching, so they feel no compunction to further enrich the poor.
